A Christmas Present for you!

WAKE UP AND YOUR CHRISTMAS PRESENT!

Two years ago my best friend was laid up after having a knee replacement, so I went to visit him.  His dog and Red were really good buddies, so I came over to party up his dog, who was getting like zero exercise due my friend's health problems.

I think Red Dog was confused because we never have real trees, we always use fake ones.  But my friend had a real tree in his living room.  I believe Red Dog's thought process was something like this, "Hey, look, indoor plumbing!"

Mrs. My Friend's Wife was none too happy.

But that was life with Red Dog.  You just never knew what might happen next.  Little surprises all of the time.

Party Animal Mister Wolf

The Wolf

"Wanna go for a ride on my motorcycle?"  Mister Wolf put the offer out to all the boppers in the diner.  "Anybody?  Anybody?!"

Yeah, lots of people put sunglasses on their dogs.  Yeah, and lots of of people dress their dogs up in little outfits too.  It's perfectly normal, right?  Right?! I saw a study that said like a lot of dog owners (more than half) are millionaires but still only 6% of all dog owners buy little costumes and play dress up with their dogs.

Hey, I get it.  I'm doing it wrong!  (Or so say 94% of all dog owners.  I'm also NOT a millionaire.) But I can see old Moon Doggy in the photo saying, "Hey, baby how's it going?  We're gonna roast weenies on a fire.  Wanna come?"

How to be safe on Halloween

Yes, it's "indicator orange."  I want to be safe while I am trick or treating.

1.  Look both ways before you cross the road.
2.  Don't get excited and run across the road.
3.  Wear bright colors so that the people in cars can see you running around all crazy trying to collect free candy and running across the road.

Red Dog Battles the Hose Monster (Dumb Dog Trick #289)

DUMB DOG TRICK #289
RED DOG BATTLES THE HOSE MONSTER

They say that Border Collies are the smartest dogs in the world.  I guess "they" never met my little Red Dog.

Red Dog was smart, but more devious than genius.  He was also super nervous and neurotic ... sort of like a canine Woody Allen.  When I used to do shows with him, I would have the announcer ask if there was a "Doggy Psychiatrist" in the house.  Why? Because Red Dog was a little crazy.

I tried playing frisbee with Red Dog.  Actually, he was my performance or show dog for almost two years, but he was never entirely reliable.  He would have good shows and bad shows ... but his anxieties got the better of him and he started shutting down when he was asked to perform in public.

He was good at disc.  He could do all the tricks.  The problem was that he had total stage fright.

When he started refusing on me, I had no choice but to retire him and look for another dog.  But that left me with the world's cutest dog and no job for that dog to do.  That's why I started doing Youtube ... it was so that Red Dog would have a hobby -- comedy and acting.

Red Dog wasn't good at the stuff most dogs are good at ... but he was the best at sitting pretty for a treat, wearing funny hats and costumes, and having his picture taken.  I made a lot of videos about Red Dog, and he was the best dog at making videos.

Since late 2008 I have taken tons of video of Red Dog.  As he recently passed away, I am going back through my digital archives to see what projects I may have started or thought about over that time ... sort of so that I can show the world how much I loved this little fellow, so I can look back years from now and remember him, so that everyone can know the love I had for him.

One last place to look for a lost pet

Missing Pet?  Don't Forget this one very important place to look
Red Dog is waiting for me at the bridge
ONE LAST PLACE TO LOOK FOR A LOST DOG

When we noticed that Red Dog was missing, we were shocked.  How did he get out of the house?  Had someone left a door open?  Had he escaped somehow from the backyard?

We busied ourselves with "lost pet" posters, a Facebook post, a "lost dog" ad on Craigslist, a photo of him posted at the Humane Society and reading websites for advice.  Still, it didn't make any sense.  Red Dog would run away, but the only place he ever wanted to go was over to the neighbor's house to bark at their dog.

CLICK HERE TO SEE RED DOG'S VIDEO OBITUARY

It just didn't make sense.  Why would he leave?  He had no reason to leave.  We loved him and he had a good home.  Plus, everything about the world outside our house was terrifying to Red Dog.  He was a super nervous, high strung border collie.  After he escaped, something must have frightened him and he bolted.

Either that or someone had taken him. It was possible as he was a beautiful dog.  But even that didn't make any sense.

We worried and cried.  We looked.  We drove around calling his name out the car window.  Nothing.  We felt like we were the worst dog owners in the world to have let him escape.

Over and over again I retraced my steps that day.  I had taken him for a walk and fed him lunch about an hour before he went missing.

About five days later the mystery was solved when my wife noticed a foul odor in some bushes.  I lifted the branches away with a shovel and there he was in our own backyard.  He hadn't run away, he had climbed into a den of sorts and passed away.

It's not unusual for dogs to hide or go away to die.  It has to do with one dog not slowing down the entire pack.  By all appearances Red Dog had passed away quickly and quietly.

But that's my advice -- really search your backyard.  Look in any sort hiding place that your dog may have found.  Really get into those areas nobody ever looks, such as bushes or any sort of hiding place.  As with our Red Dog, perhaps your dog too has crawled away to quietly die.  Had we looked more carefully in our backyard, it wouldn't have saved Red Dog but it would have saved us a week of worry and tears, as well as the traumatic experience of finding his remains four days later.

Peace and love.  Hug your pets today because you never know what tomorrow might bring.

Meet Me on Rainbow Bridge (Goodbye Red Dog)

He'll be there on Rainbow Bridge.

I know it.  He will be waiting for me.

He will give me hugs and kisses.  Then we will play perfect freestyle canine disc into eternity. I will be young and strong again.  You will be peaceful and focused.  I love you, Red Dog.  I will love you forever.

Red disappeared about a week ago.  We freaked out. We searched for him.  We visited all the shelters and put flyers up.  We worried.  We cried.  We wondered.  We couldn't figure out what happened.  He had run away before, but never farther than the neighbors house.

Today (four days later) we found him in the back yard.  He was hidden deep in some bushes.  It looked like he had lied down and fallen asleep, never to awaken again.  Perhaps he ate something.  Perhaps he was bitten by a poisonous spider.  Perhaps he choked on something.  Perhaps he just died of natural causes.  I don't know.

I had walked him that morning.  He was doing so well on a leash, which was a major accomplishment for him.

My friend is gone.  I am grieving for him.  There is nothing I can do to bring him back.  But I know that I gave him a great life, a loving home and the best care possible.

Keyboard Dog (Dumb Dog Trick #283)

Reading contracts and weighing offers, trying like hell to remember what it was that I had forgotten and the following events unfold:

1. Musical Chairs for Dogs Star Red Dog goes solo to bring us Dumb Dog Trick 283: "Dog Plays Piano." 2.  The internet ignites with comparisons to -- as in blatant rip off -- Keyboard Cat.  3.  Red Dog admits that was his intent all along and parties forever and never really cares.  4. Play me Off, Keyboard Cat ... Please!

Actually, Red Dog has no music ambitions.  He wants to jump into the ring to assist in a pro bull riding event. Red Dog is trying to attack a television perched on top of the piano. Bull riding is his favorite thing to watch and/or interact with.  But I'd still give his song "Keyboard Dog" a 7.5 with a danceable beat, upbeat but for the disconcerting vocal arrangements.  Har!

Hey, look!  Red Dog plays the piano!  He's like the best at it, right?

No fake out.  Those are his real paws.

So, mangy old Red Dog still likes to attack the television, see.  And the head honchos here at K9TV (Howl-o-vision) have better things to do than worry about that.  So attack the television all you want, Senior Red Dog.
