One last place to look for a lost pet

Missing Pet?  Don't Forget this one very important place to look

ONE LAST PLACE TO LOOK FOR A LOST DOG

When we noticed that Red Dog was missing, we were shocked.  How did he get out of the house?  Had someone left a door open?  Had he escaped somehow from the backyard?

We busied ourselves with "lost pet" posters, a Facebook post, a "lost dog" ad on Craigslist, a photo of him posted at the Humane Society and reading websites for advice.  Still, it didn't make any sense.  Red Dog would run away, but the only place he ever wanted to go was over to the neighbor's house to bark at their dog.

It just didn't make sense.  Why would he leave?  He had no reason to leave.  We loved him and he had a good home.  Plus, everything about the world outside our house was terrifying to Red Dog.  He was a super nervous, high strung border collie.  After he escaped, something must have frightened him and he bolted.

Either that or someone had taken him. It was possible as he was a beautiful dog.  But even that didn't make any sense.

We worried and cried.  We looked.  We drove around calling his name out the car window.  Nothing.  We felt like we were the worst dog owners in the world to have let him escape.

Over and over again I retraced my steps that day.  I had taken him for a walk and fed him lunch about an hour before he went missing.

About five days later the mystery was solved when my wife noticed a foul odor in some bushes.  I lifted the branches away with a shovel and there he was in our own backyard.  He hadn't run away, he had climbed into a den of sorts and passed away.

It's not unusual for dogs to hide or go away to die.  It has to do with one dog not slowing down the entire pack.  By all appearances Red Dog had passed away quickly and quietly.

But that's my advice -- really search your backyard.  Look in any sort hiding place that your dog may have found.  Really get into those areas nobody ever looks, such as bushes or any sort of hiding place.  As with our Red Dog, perhaps your dog too has crawled away to quietly die.  Had we looked more carefully in our backyard, it wouldn't have saved Red Dog but it would have saved us a week of worry and tears, as well as the traumatic experience of finding his remains four days later.

Peace and love.  Hug your pets today because you never know what tomorrow might bring.
