A well cared for wiener dog.

Portland Pet Expo. October 6, 2012.  Don't trip over my wiener.  Thank you to this nice human and his furry friend for allowing me to take their photograph.  I have so much fun at pet expos.  I meet so many people who are so into dogs.  It does my heart good.

The word "wiener" is just a funny word.  Have you ever called someone a "weenie"?  It's a silly word with a very slight naughty double entendre.  When Anthony Wiener was getting into so much trouble, I just couldn't keep a smile off my face because of his last name.  I know it's immature.  I know that it's a dumb joke.  I know that it's stupid.  But I still think it's funny.

Also, I've been homebound for a long stretch of time, so it was good to get out of the house.  I must thank Dr. Swainstein for chauffeuring me to and from the event.  Peace and love.

Keyboard Dog (Dumb Dog Trick #283)

Reading contracts and weighing offers, trying like hell to remember what it was that I had forgotten and the following events unfold:

1. Musical Chairs for Dogs Star Red Dog goes solo to bring us Dumb Dog Trick 283: "Dog Plays Piano." 2.  The internet ignites with comparisons to -- as in blatant rip off -- Keyboard Cat.  3.  Red Dog admits that was his intent all along and parties forever and never really cares.  4. Play me Off, Keyboard Cat ... Please!

Actually, Red Dog has no music ambitions.  He wants to jump into the ring to assist in a pro bull riding event. Red Dog is trying to attack a television perched on top of the piano. Bull riding is his favorite thing to watch and/or interact with.  But I'd still give his song "Keyboard Dog" a 7.5 with a danceable beat, upbeat but for the disconcerting vocal arrangements.  Har!

No fake out.  Those are his real paws.

Recently one of my videos made it on the LOL PETS show on the ALN Network.  Peace and love and ALN network!

Seriously, I am proud to have shared (in my minuscule amount) billing with Kip Kay.  Even though he has his own show (and probably a mansion and a yacht) and I got ten seconds of my silly dogs being super silly on the silly happy funny peace and love (Lol Pets) show.

I am so totally cool with this.  I'm thinking maybe I should send more videos to ALN.  I was on their website but couldn't figure out how to post anything other than a "roll out" or "fame spot" or "spot out."  I'll go back to their site and look around a little more later.

I made the video, "Musical Chairs for Dogs," about two years ago.

Yeah, yeah, I goofed because you can see me in the reflection in the windows.  Still I really like this video, and I say that even though I made the video.  IMHO this is an awesome video.

I felt good that day.  I enjoyed making this video.  It was a sort of cataclysmic milkshake of passive dog training mixed with low budget video production.  Of all my videos, this one is my favorite.

Oh, and I have this video because my friend Ilovejanelle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WttfqFnah0U  captured it on her cellphone and sent it to me.  I watch so little television, I probably would have missed it.

When I see one of my videos used in a television show, blog or website, linked, whatever, I feel good about that.  It means that someone else agreed with my vision, got the joke, liked the message, and passed it along.  It's a good feeling.

Over the years I have signed stuff over (non exclusive rights) on some of my videos for the asking.  I have also sold videos outright, primarily winning contest entries.  Fundamentally, though, I don't really care if I get paid or not.  What I want is for people to see my stuff.

Sometimes when I see my videos on television I wonder, "Gee, when did I sign the release on that video." Because I probably did sign a release.

I don't want a thousand people to see one video, I would rather have ten people watch all of my videos.  Some people will "get" my stuff.  Some will not.  My mission is to find the people who will get it and make more videos for them.

Do you give your dog enough water?

One of the basic things every dog needs every day is fresh water. Exactly how much water is that?

From what I have heard the right amount of water is about an ounce of water per day per pound your dog weighs. So a 12 lb. little dog would need a medium-sized glass of water per day. But a 64 lb. dog would need a gallon.

Dogs are also self-regulating waterers. That means that if you put out a bunch of water for them, dogs will drink as much as they want or need. If they drink too much, they can leave some on the trees and the grass and the neighbor kid's bicycle.

My old dog Blue had quite a record of going pee on stuff. He really like to go you-know-what on other dogs, especially little dogs. He'd just mark them as soon as they got in position.

Blue also liked to mark other people's stuff, like their gear bags and ice chests. Blue liked to pee on buildings, food, statutes and people.

Yes, even people. Myself included.

Blue once peed on the marketing director of the local human society. I felt so bad, because the guy is awesome and he's in a wheelchair. What does my dog do? Lift his leg on the guy in the wheelchair.

Why? I have no idea. But I always try to give Blue enough water.

Actually, always have fresh water available for your dog. When you play with your dog (or play a dog sport) you should always have a bowl around for all of the dogs.

The only dog wee wee story I have that tops Blue's exploits would be the time that Red Dog peed on my brother's Christmas Tree. Red Dog was not allowed back into my brother's house for quite some time because Mrs. My Brother did not appreciate Red Dog's sense of humour.

"Hey, I was just goofin' and I peed on your Christmas Tree," said Red Dog.

"Leave now and I will let you live," said Mrs. Brother's Wife.

You get the idea.

How should you care for a geriatric dog?

Beyond the basics of food, shelter and medical care, older dogs need interaction and attention as much as any dog does. The "Funny Hats" dog game is excellently suited for elderly dogs and dog breeds with lower activity levels.

The photo at the start start of the video is of the Good Boy Blue, who was my "show" or "performance" dog for about eight or nine years. I retired him when he was around 11 years old. He is currently 13 years old.

How do I care for my old dog? A few quick tips - be sure to keep their nails clipped, as elder dogs require less activity nail clipping becomes essential; moisten a towel with warm water and give grandpa (or grandma) dog a good old sponge bath, they'll love it; a check up with your veterinarian is highly recommended.

The Good Boy Blue has slowly lost most of his eyesight, but his hearing is still exceptional, his appetite is good, and he can still romp around and play when he wants to. Not bad for one of the elder statesmen of canine disc. Blue started performing at disc dog competitions in 2001. He was a runner up to be the dog pictured on the large size Milkbone Dog Biscuit box, and that was really fun. He performed freestyle canine disc with the member of the Washington Owners of Flying Disc Dogs from 2001 through about 2009. He was a five time Skyhoundz Canine Disc World Championship contender from '02 through '06. In the photo at the beginning of this video, it's Blue and me performing that Human Canine Disc World Championships in Seattle, Washington, in approximately 2004. Blue is still in excellent shape, and I call him a "skinny old man." Yet, I watch him, as anyone who cares for an elderly dog should. He has a couple of lipomas that I keep an eyey on. I make sure he has plenty of fresh water. I make sure he gets a good walk every day. But I also watch him to make sure that he's not experiencing pain or discomfort. He's a bit arthritic, but that's not terribly surprising. I'll get some links and research together on the topic of caring for an elderly dog.
