RED DOG BATTLES THE HOSE MONSTER

They say that Border Collies are the smartest dogs in the world.  I guess "they" never met my little Red Dog.

Red Dog was smart, but more devious than genius.  He was also super nervous and neurotic ... sort of like a canine Woody Allen.  When I used to do shows with him, I would have the announcer ask if there was a "Doggy Psychiatrist" in the house.  Why? Because Red Dog was a little crazy.

I tried playing frisbee with Red Dog.  Actually, he was my performance or show dog for almost two years, but he was never entirely reliable.  He would have good shows and bad shows ... but his anxieties got the better of him and he started shutting down when he was asked to perform in public.

He was good at disc.  He could do all the tricks.  The problem was that he had total stage fright.

When he started refusing on me, I had no choice but to retire him and look for another dog.  But that left me with the world's cutest dog and no job for that dog to do.  That's why I started doing Youtube ... it was so that Red Dog would have a hobby -- comedy and acting.

Red Dog wasn't good at the stuff most dogs are good at ... but he was the best at sitting pretty for a treat, wearing funny hats and costumes, and having his picture taken.  I made a lot of videos about Red Dog, and he was the best dog at making videos.

Since late 2008 I have taken tons of video of Red Dog.  As he recently passed away, I am going back through my digital archives to see what projects I may have started or thought about over that time ... sort of so that I can show the world how much I loved this little fellow, so I can look back years from now and remember him, so that everyone can know the love I had for him.

For me the question has always been, what would Dr. Suess do?  If you're like, what would  Chuck Norris do, then whatever.

The format of this video has become sort of my standard goof.  Mixing the live sound with prefabbed loops of beats and burps and bops and chirps.  It works for me.  Let me know how it's working for you.

You get the mix going and it's like BOW WOW -- Your dog is singing in its own Music Video.  Your dog is kicking a verse like he's Bruce freaking Lee and everything already in the house and everything.  You know what I'm saying?

What's your spoiled-assed cat got?  That sick purr noise it makes when it digs its claws into the side of the sofa?  That's whack, man.  That's like the same noise that zombies make when they feed.

This isn't really the 284th Dumb Dog Trick video.  For a while there I assigned random numbers, particularly between 1 and 100.  I was more into numerology than common sense as I attacked 100 through 200, but I started rolling well in the 200 series, cranking out way too many videos in sequence ... 260s 270s now the 280s.  Whatever, like you care anyway.

How should you care for a geriatric dog?

Beyond the basics of food, shelter and medical care, older dogs need interaction and attention as much as any dog does. The "Funny Hats" dog game is excellently suited for elderly dogs and dog breeds with lower activity levels.

The photo at the start start of the video is of the Good Boy Blue, who was my "show" or "performance" dog for about eight or nine years. I retired him when he was around 11 years old. He is currently 13 years old.

How do I care for my old dog? A few quick tips - be sure to keep their nails clipped, as elder dogs require less activity nail clipping becomes essential; moisten a towel with warm water and give grandpa (or grandma) dog a good old sponge bath, they'll love it; a check up with your veterinarian is highly recommended.

The Good Boy Blue has slowly lost most of his eyesight, but his hearing is still exceptional, his appetite is good, and he can still romp around and play when he wants to. Not bad for one of the elder statesmen of canine disc. Blue started performing at disc dog competitions in 2001. He was a runner up to be the dog pictured on the large size Milkbone Dog Biscuit box, and that was really fun. He performed freestyle canine disc with the member of the Washington Owners of Flying Disc Dogs from 2001 through about 2009. He was a five time Skyhoundz Canine Disc World Championship contender from '02 through '06. In the photo at the beginning of this video, it's Blue and me performing that Human Canine Disc World Championships in Seattle, Washington, in approximately 2004. Blue is still in excellent shape, and I call him a "skinny old man." Yet, I watch him, as anyone who cares for an elderly dog should. He has a couple of lipomas that I keep an eyey on. I make sure he has plenty of fresh water. I make sure he gets a good walk every day. But I also watch him to make sure that he's not experiencing pain or discomfort. He's a bit arthritic, but that's not terribly surprising. I'll get some links and research together on the topic of caring for an elderly dog.
