Two years ago my best friend was laid up after having a knee replacement, so I went to visit him.  His dog and Red were really good buddies, so I came over to party up his dog, who was getting like zero exercise due my friend's health problems.

I think Red Dog was confused because we never have real trees, we always use fake ones.  But my friend had a real tree in his living room.  I believe Red Dog's thought process was something like this, "Hey, look, indoor plumbing!"

Mrs. My Friend's Wife was none too happy.

But that was life with Red Dog.  You just never knew what might happen next.  Little surprises all of the time.

Oh look.  A meme. A Happy Birthday Meme!

Happy 100th Birthday Blue Dog.

In its most minimal form, a meme is a photograph.  For the purposes of this explanation, that's where we will start.  Happy 100th Birthday Blue Dog!

Blue dog just keeps on kicking.   Just a few minutes ago he was jumping around the kitchen for some kibble.  What an awesome old guy!  Here's to 100 more! 

 A meme is words + pictures.

But a meme is more than just a picture, as a meme will almost always include words as well.  Think of it like a greeting card.  A meme conveys a message, usually humorous, with that message conveyed in conjunction with the image.  

Here, this might help ... A meme = words + image.  A meme is a method of conveying information quickly.  For example, "advice animals" are common memes.  Google the phrase "socially awkward penguin" if you don't believe me.

But, like a greeting card, there is some art to this.  We might all agree that some folks have a gift for writing greeting cards.  It is the same with memes, and very fine examples of memes might have you entertained, even laughing out loud (LOL) for hours on end.

Is it funny?  Who knows.  One person might think so, while another might disagree.  Is it important?  Yes, memes have the potential to be very important in a number of ways.  Memes convey information quickly and on multiple levels.  Memes can be used to inform people on any topic.  Got that?  ANY TOPIC.  Politics, religion, science, etc.

Memes can be used to teach, train, entertain or persuade.  That would mean, of course, that memes would be highly useful in advertising.  Anyone under the age of 20 seems to know this instinctually.

Near my house is a gi-normous billboard.  On the billboard is a Katie Perry's face with simple text, essentially a meme, advertising a product.  Pop goes the meme, as they say.

Lifting off the top of the box, I found wonderful paw-print tissue paper covering the surprises inside.  I was immediately intrigued by the Slurpabowl.  My dogs could have cared less, but the origami-esc Slurpabowl was the most like a toy and demanded to be played with first.   It was also like serving the dogs from a new plate or dish, giving our little event a sort of cocktail-party elegance that is rarely present when feeding or playing with our dogs.

The Harvest Blend treats were opened next.  With treats in hand, our dogs were enticed to do some tricks.  They scarfed those treats down fast.

The supplements were saved for later.  Our younger dog, Zoozoo, is a performing canine disc dog.  I’ll be interested in seeing how she responds to Missing Link.  If I see any improvement in her drive or energy, you can bet I’ll buy more.  Our other dog, Blue, is almost 14 years old.  He might benefit from Healthy Motion and the glucosamine it contains.

My only complaint would be that there was no toy in the happy meal.  Treats are always awesome.  Vitamins are good for you.  But my dogs think toys are the most fun to play with.  

At every pet expo I have been to (and I have been to quite a few), almost every exhibitor has samples to try.  It’s sort of an expected thing in the pet industry, that the samples will be available.  It’s cool that Pawbox has entered the ring to connect products to consumers.

Musical Chairs for Dogs Star Red Dog goes solo to bring us Dumb Dog Trick 283: "Dog Plays Piano." 2.  The internet ignites with comparisons to -- as in blatant rip off -- Keyboard Cat.  3.  Red Dog admits that was his intent all along and parties forever and never really cares.  4. Play me Off, Keyboard Cat ... Please!

Actually, Red Dog has no music ambitions.  He wants to jump into the ring to assist in a pro bull riding event. Red Dog is trying to attack a television perched on top of the piano. Bull riding is his favorite thing to watch and/or interact with.  But I'd still give his song "Keyboard Dog" a 7.5 with a danceable beat, upbeat but for the disconcerting vocal arrangements.  Har!

Hey, look!  Red Dog plays the piano!  He's like the best at it, right?

No fake out.  Those are his real paws.

Eating Glasses (Dumb Dog Trick #277)

You walk into the kitchen and what do you see?  Chewed up household items!

What, that doesn't happen to you too?  Happens to me more times than I like to admit.

Zoozoo can gain access to the kitchen garbage with a push of her nose.  It gets too tempting for her when it gets full.  But nothing prepared me for a chewed up glass.

So, she made me an art present, right?  Chewed holes in a plastic cup with surgical precision so that I can make a necklace out of it.

It's like why, why would a dog do this?  And I'm like, who cares why, how can I make her do more stuff like this?  Gonna get this bronzed.  Call me Proud Daddy.

I collected glassware for years.  I have lots of collectible glasses.  But I drink out of cheap plastic cups, and I use those cups until they are completely and totally unusable.

Yeah, well the plastic cups and some of my favorite comfort glassware, like mason jars for drinking juice, like just some garage sale stuff that's pretty funky.  Fireking especially.  About half our kitchenware never sees the inside of the dishwasher.  I got some funky coffee cups, thank you very much.  A funky cup makes cafe taste so much better.

When you use vintage stuff on a daily basis you will have breakage, but it's worth it to appreciate a finely made Russell Wright serving platter, a Coors pottery coffee cup, or an arrangement of flowers in an oversized Red Wing vase.

Dog Friendly (Canine Thirst Quencher)

Tacoma Metro Parks built this kid play area, which is totally awesome, and part of it is a water park.  I don't go to this park very often, but today I noticed that it had like the coolest dog water fountain I had ever seen.

Now that's dog friendly!

Dog friendly places are where you know it's okay to have your dog, so long as your dog is okay with whatever else might be there.  You know what I'm saying?

It's like when I walk my dog, I know which houses have dogs and probably don't mind if my dog makes a little wee wee on their lawn.  (I always pick up the #2.)  I know which houses are dog friendly.  Hey, yeah, and I know which ones aren't!

The entire world is like that.  To find the dog friendly places, sometimes you have to look for them and sometimes they just surprise you.

Did you know that fancier hotels in the US are more likely to allow dogs?  Yep.  Think about little old ladies with teacup pooches in their purses.  Cheap American hotels won't let you have your dog there ... fancy hotels will.  Not always, but most of the time.

And the dog/fancy hotel works with larger dogs.  Many times I have had to upgrade the hotel to find one that's dog friendly.  I should add that this rule applies in all places BUT Canada. But in Canada a cheap hotel is likely to allow dogs.  Don't know why that is.

It's also easier to fly with your dog in Canada, so long as you depart from Canada.  So, I used to drive up to Vancouver and fly over to Calgary, rather than fly from Seattle to Calgary.

Dogs enjoy wide-spread acceptance in Canada, within reason.

When you get a dog, though, it's like the rest of your life consists of bouncing from one dog-friendly place to another.    From your house, to the dog park, etc.

Ah, heck, though I do have to admit that I appreciate the City of Tacoma putting this dog fountain in.  It's in the park behind Norpoint Center.  If you know Northeast Tacoma, you probably know where this is.

My dog's name is Zoozoo, and she is a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.  If she is an indication of the breed, this is not a good breed for the novice dog owner.  She's a handful.  She would chase cars and scare people if I let her.  I don't let her.

Anyway, she gets doggone thirsty when we play frisbee at the park.  Just saying.

Hey, this Dumb Dog Trick got some interest from our friends in the United Kingdom for a show called "Talk Back" that is produced at Freemantle Media.  Totally cool, huh?

Really awesome and respectable production company.  They basically offered an option, which may restrict my ability to use this video for other purposes or projects for the next two years.  During that two years they can buy it outright for a stated amount.  Could my future include Euros direct deposited into my Paypay account?  Oh, yeah!

This was an early video for me.  I believe I used a non-HD flip cam and prayed for decent picture quality.  Then I edited on this really cheap, awful laptop in Windows Movie Maker.  Having fun, learning a little bit about video and sharing my darling doggies.

I so hope this video is used in a UK television show.  That would really make me happy.

How should you care for a geriatric dog?

Beyond the basics of food, shelter and medical care, older dogs need interaction and attention as much as any dog does. The "Funny Hats" dog game is excellently suited for elderly dogs and dog breeds with lower activity levels.

The photo at the start start of the video is of the Good Boy Blue, who was my "show" or "performance" dog for about eight or nine years. I retired him when he was around 11 years old. He is currently 13 years old.

How do I care for my old dog? A few quick tips - be sure to keep their nails clipped, as elder dogs require less activity nail clipping becomes essential; moisten a towel with warm water and give grandpa (or grandma) dog a good old sponge bath, they'll love it; a check up with your veterinarian is highly recommended.

The Good Boy Blue has slowly lost most of his eyesight, but his hearing is still exceptional, his appetite is good, and he can still romp around and play when he wants to. Not bad for one of the elder statesmen of canine disc. Blue started performing at disc dog competitions in 2001. He was a runner up to be the dog pictured on the large size Milkbone Dog Biscuit box, and that was really fun. He performed freestyle canine disc with the member of the Washington Owners of Flying Disc Dogs from 2001 through about 2009. He was a five time Skyhoundz Canine Disc World Championship contender from '02 through '06. In the photo at the beginning of this video, it's Blue and me performing that Human Canine Disc World Championships in Seattle, Washington, in approximately 2004. Blue is still in excellent shape, and I call him a "skinny old man." Yet, I watch him, as anyone who cares for an elderly dog should. He has a couple of lipomas that I keep an eyey on. I make sure he has plenty of fresh water. I make sure he gets a good walk every day. But I also watch him to make sure that he's not experiencing pain or discomfort. He's a bit arthritic, but that's not terribly surprising. I'll get some links and research together on the topic of caring for an elderly dog.
