Crazy costumes for canine companions

Lots of people like to dress their dogs up in silly costumes.  Lots of dogs tolerate this behavior because it leads to pets and treats.  Here we have a Blue Dog Lady Bug ...

How to be safe on Halloween

Yes, it's "indicator orange."  I want to be safe while I am trick or treating.

1.  Look both ways before you cross the road.
2.  Don't get excited and run across the road.
3.  Wear bright colors so that the people in cars can see you running around all crazy trying to collect free candy and running across the road.

happy birthday blue dog homemade meme

Oh look.  A meme. A Happy Birthday Meme!

Happy 100th Birthday Blue Dog.
In its most minimal form, a meme is a photograph.  For the purposes of this explanation, that's where we will start.  Happy 100th Birthday Blue Dog!

Blue dog just keeps on kicking.   Just a few minutes ago he was jumping around the kitchen for some kibble.  What an awesome old guy!  Here's to 100 more!

A meme is words + pictures.
But a meme is more than just a picture, as a meme will almost always include words as well.  Think of it like a greeting card.  A meme conveys a message, usually humorous, with that message conveyed in conjunction with the image.

Here, this might help ... A meme = words + image.  A meme is a method of conveying information quickly.  For example, "advice animals" are common memes.  Google the phrase "socially awkward penguin" if you don't believe me.

But, like a greeting card, there is some art to this.  We might all agree that some folks have a gift for writing greeting cards.  It is the same with memes, and very fine examples of memes might have you entertained, even laughing out loud (LOL) for hours on end.

Uno mas, por favor!
Is it funny?  Who knows.  One person might think so, while another might disagree.  Is it important?  Yes, memes have the potential to be very important in a number of ways.  Memes convey information quickly and on multiple levels.  Memes can be used to inform people on any topic.  Got that?  ANY TOPIC.  Politics, religion, science, etc.

Memes can be used to teach, train, entertain or persuade.  That would mean, of course, that memes would be highly useful in advertising.  Anyone under the age of 20 seems to know this instinctually.

Near my house is a gi-normous billboard.  On the billboard is a Katie Perry's face with simple text, essentially a meme, advertising a product.  Pop goes the meme, as they say.

YOUTUBE IS WHERE IT'S AT

If you would like to try this, download the first photograph and plug it into Preview (on a Mac) or whatever program Windows-based computers are currently using for this purpose.  Have a go at it.  Make your own.  Homemade memes are the best.  Hot fresh homemade memes!

Poppa Wheelie Dog

Wheel Chair Dog wants to pop a wheelie.

All joking aside, the story of how this dog lost its front legs is truly awful.  People injured him, then let him lie suffering until he almost died.  Almost.  Today this dog is a dog again.  A fur real dog who is cared for and (I must say) loved.  Portland, Oregon Pet Expo 2012.

A lot of times "chair dogs" are tough to take care of.  I've just heard that from talking to the rescue organization I know up in the Puget Sound area.

I asked the caretaker of this one how he was, and the answer was, "Oh, he's not bad at all."  And you should see of the range of goofy faces this dog can make.  This dog could be featured in a future dumb dog trick episode fur real, fur sure, crazy dumb, cute and awesome.  Have his agent call me.  Jimmyjumpnjive

FROM THIS EXPO!!!

"I am small, I don't eat much," says rescue chihuahua Chica.
Got time for one more photo?  This little ball of warm, furry cute was available for adoption.  Couldn't you just love on this little dog?  The first night I would stack blankets and play like "princess and the pea" for nighty nights with her.

Service Poodle

A Poodle, trained as a service dog.
A photo from the Portland Pet Expo, October 6, 2012 in Portland, Oregon.  I wish I would have had more time to talk with this lady about her dog, but time just wouldn't allow it.  I enjoy pet expos because I get to see dogs of all types but especially because I get to see service dogs in action.  My understanding in talking to people that a dog that serves a person in a wheel chair is generally called a "chair dog."  I also have been told that a request for a chair dog may take years to be filled.  Despite the agonizing wait, a service dog may make a world of difference in a disabled person's life, providing valuable assistance and companionship.  Jimmyjumpnjive 2012

Pawbox Pet Product Review

https://www.pawbox.com

A new subscription service will send pet product samples to you in the mail.  The service is called, “Pawbox.”

The concept is simple but awesome.  Once a month Pawbox will send a package to you.  The package will include five pet product samples for you and your pet to try.

The box we sampled included a “Slurpabowl,” an origami-ish, recycleable food or water dish, Harvest Blends sweet potato treats, Himalayan Dog Chews, and two nutritional supplements.  One supplement was called Missing Link, a product that will deliver nutrients similar to what a raw diet might provide.

The other supplement, Healthy Motion, is a certified organic glucosamine product that will protect your pet’s joints from stress and injury. Before I get too into any sort of review, I do have to shout out that Himalayan Dog Chews is a Washington-state-based company, located about 45 minutes north of my home.  Go, Washington!  It’s also a great product that we have sampled before at pet fairs and expos in my home area.

Lifting off the top of the box, I found wonderful paw-print tissue paper covering the surprises inside.  I was immediately intrigued by the Slurpabowl.  My dogs could have cared less, but the origami-esc Slurpabowl was the most like a toy and demanded to be played with first.   It was also like serving the dogs from a new plate or dish, giving our little event a sort of cocktail-party elegance that is rarely present when feeding or playing with our dogs.

The Harvest Blend treats were opened next.  With treats in hand, our dogs were enticed to do some tricks.  They scarfed those treats down fast.

The supplements were saved for later.  Our younger dog, Zoozoo, is a performing canine disc dog.  I’ll be interested in seeing how she responds to Missing Link.  If I see any improvement in her drive or energy, you can bet I’ll buy more.  Our other dog, Blue, is almost 14 years old.  He might benefit from Healthy Motion and the glucosamine it contains.

My only complaint would be that there was no toy in the happy meal.  Treats are always awesome.  Vitamins are good for you.  But my dogs think toys are the most fun to play with.

At every pet expo I have been to (and I have been to quite a few), almost every exhibitor has samples to try.  It’s sort of an expected thing in the pet industry, that the samples will be available.  It’s cool that Pawbox has entered the ring to connect products to consumers.

SPECIAL OFFER:  Use the special Jimmyjumpnjive coupon code "paw11" when you make your first order and receive a 50% savings on your first month's subscription. That's a $10 value for just $4.99 and includes shipping and handling costs.  Order now for Thanksgiving, Christmas or both!

Ryan says bring on the VP debate

Do you think Paul Ryan is nervous about debating Joe Biden?  He probably should be if he isn't.  It's going to be an interesting night.  Will Biden say something stupid?  Probably, but that's to be expected.

Partying with the Pit Bull Boss

Portland Pet Expo was a Pit Bull Party!

Pit Bull
The coolest thing about the 2012 Portland (Oregon) Pet Expo was the number of pit bulls in attendance. Every other dog was pit.  I think that had a lot to do with Shorty Rossi, the star of the Animal Planet show, "Pit Boss."  (Click here for more information about "Pit Boss.")

Shorty Rossi, star of Animal Planet show, "Pit Boss,"
with Mike McKenzie, founding member of the
Washington Owners of Flying Disc Dogs
Shorty has a book out entitled, "Four Feet Tall and Rising."  He's also the founder of Shorty's Pit Bull Rescue, a non profit that Rossi created in 2001.  (Click here to visit Shorty's Pit Bull Rescue.)

Shorty's famous dog, Hercules.

He's also a really nice guy.  At the pet expo Shorty was ready to sign autographs, have his picture taken, answer questions and interact with all the expo-goers who were interested.

In honor of Shorty, please enjoy some of the awesome photos of pit bulls.

Pit Bull on wheels (canine wheelchair)

As I was researching Shorty, I             found that he works with Linda Blair's shelter and rescue organization, Linda Blair World Heart Foundation.  (Click here for more information on Linda Blair's animal rescue.)

Peace and love and puppies.

Sorry, Turkey, the Jokes on You!

 GOBBLE GOBBLE

These young turkeys have it pretty darn good at the local organic farm.

Tom Turkey serving life.
Look at little Tom trot and play with his little turkey brethren.   Look at Tom's family trying to protect Tom from the creepy city slicker with the camera.

Tom "Giblets" Turkey's clan is one mean bunch of ornery feathered hombres.

Hey, Download your own "Tom Turkey in Prison" meme.
Look at Tom eating organic produce leftovers lovingly served to him by his human caretaker.  In the organic pasture, where Colon does organic things with other organic turkey beings, on a sunny day in Washington state.

Yes, we drove our Prius to the organic farm, what about it? The young turkeys here at are shown at early September-ish.  They'll be ready in time, don't worry grandma.

I've never eaten one of these guys, not that I wouldn't.  They get pretty big and they get darned expensive.  You start talking $100 for a turkey, you know?  But they get way too big for my little family.

What am I supposed to do, get all excited and blow bank getting an organic turkey, or grab a butterball and pay for the whole spread (with wine and cheese) with that $100?  Not much of a question for me.

It's a freaking turkey, man.  Get over it.  What?!  That one's $125?!  Sweet mother of Neptune -- it's a turkey for crying out loud.  We're going to cook it and make gravy out of the juices.

We're going to cut its giblets up.  What's a giblet?

Pardon my wiener

A well cared for wiener dog.
Portland Pet Expo. October 6, 2012.  Don't trip over my wiener.  Thank you to this nice human and his furry friend for allowing me to take their photograph.  I have so much fun at pet expos.  I meet so many people who are so into dogs.  It does my heart good.
This is awesome fun.

Oh look, a picture of a happy and well-loved wiener!

The word "wiener" is just a funny word.  Have you ever called someone a "weenie"?  It's a silly word with a very slight naughty double entendre.  When Anthony Wiener was getting into so much trouble, I just couldn't keep a smile off my face because of his last name.  I know it's immature.  I know that it's a dumb joke.  I know that it's stupid.  But I still think it's funny.

Also, I've been homebound for a long stretch of time, so it was good to get out of the house.  I must thank Dr. Swainstein for chauffeuring me to and from the event.  Peace and love.

Arts and Crafts Details in Tacoma, Washington

arts and crafts era dutch boy tile
Look at the awesome details on this fireplace mantle!

I saw these little gems, and I just had to take pictures.  Original Arts and Crafts like a nice piece of Weller Claywood or Burntwood pottery.  Lovely.  Little dutch boy and dutch girl ceramic tiles.
1921 Craftsman Tile, Tacoma, WA
I have been highly attuned to all things arts and crafts of late.  It's like my arts and crafts radar just started working. Perhaps I have finally trained my eye to find it against the backdrop of so many different styles.  However that works, when I saw these little tiles I immediately loved them.

Little parts and pieces of a Visions of a bygone era.  Little gems that have survived.  For years I lived in a neighborhood that included many arts and crafts era houses.  It was a wonderful neighborhood.

The dutch boy and dutch girl tiles came from that area, and are located in recently remodeled 1921 craftsman style house in Tacoma, Washington, in a neighborhood known as the North End.

The fireplace had been the sole source of heat and the tiles were covered in 90 years of smoot. During a rebuild of the house, the homeowner cleaned the tiles. I totally agree with cleaning the tiles.  Who needs all that grime in a nicely remodeled home?  Some, and I would like to think a small number of people, would have said to leave the patina.  I disagree completely on this one -- clean is cool and brought out the details and contrast.

I noticed them immediately and thought how nicely they complemented the period of the house.  Interestingly enough, almost the only thing original about the house was the mantle and tiles.  I can't imagine how much scrubbing it took to get these tiles this clean.  Nice detail to save.

Garage Sale Divas! What would David do?

Intuition and the garage sale.
Assorted American Art Pottery Pieces
You're at a garage sale and you see something you collect. What do you do?  "Play it cool. Pick it up if it's small.  Carry it with you if you can," advise the garage sale experts at Dumb Dog Tricks Intl.
Red Wing Pottery Mark
If a piece of furniture is too big to carry, you can always let 'em know you want the piece and put down cash.  Cash is king.  If you don't know that, then you don't know the world of high stakes garage sales.  The important names in this bulletin are McCoy, Red Wing and Bauer.  There's one unmarked piece that I can't identify yet.  All of these pieces came from two garage sales that were near each other, perhaps only two blocks away from each other. Walking distance.

As I recall I went into one garage sale and scored both of the red vases.  I was like, "Wow, look at the cool stuff I just found."  Then I went over to the other house and found three or four more collectible pieces.  I've had good days before, but this was a way too easy for whatever reason.  And it was a particularly successful venture into the world of the second hand American pottery collector.
Yeah, I know this is not art pottery.  At best it's poor man's art pottery.  Curse you, David Rago!  I cannot afford REAL Art Pottery so I must collect garage sale floral ware.  I heard that Dave Rago is in a new  new reality show -- garage sale divas!  Bring it, Rago!  I'll show you a pot!  Don't piss in it! Har! Snark!
I like to think that these little gems of pottery were calling out and I followed their vibration to find them.  Is it intuition or just luck when you find a little gem of vintage American pottery. Intuition (and luck) like all my old soup recipes.
Blue is marked Bauer, Peach is marked USA (McCoy).
Collect what you love and enjoy what you collect.  You can entertain yourself forever with the possibilities, why stop at one house but not another?  Why lift the lid off one box but another? Why date one person but not another!  Har! Gak!

Extra credit question -- what is this piece?  Russel Wright-ish but no mark.  The handle is hollow but it has the old kiln marks on the bottom, like any old piece of pottery.  Wait a minute ... is it possible that this is this Unamerican Art Pottery!  Har! Snork!  My guess is that this is probably 1950's but not American.

The Heywood Wakefield Mystery Mirror

How I found my
Heywood Wakefield Mystery Mirror

I have always been a Les Schwab kind of guy.  But it was a Sunday, you know? (Les gives his guys the day off on Sundays.  I think so that they can watch football on television.)  So we had to go to an inferior, though still very manly tire store that did not have coffee and pop corn.
Stumbled into a second hand store next door and was drawn to this mirror.  It was calling my name.  lifted it out of the rubble.  It's always so exciting when you find something you really, really like.
I believe this is colloquially referred to as a Heywood Wakefield accessory or dresser mirror.  I do not know the name or line it was made with.  It would have been made around 1950, as my best guess would have it.   Arts and crafts genius.  Hints of mid century modern and deco.  If you're into this type of stuff, this is exciting stuff.
Heywood Wakefield arts and crafts mirror.
It's tough even to find a decent photo of this particular mirror because it's very rare and very cool.

I immediately liked it but it was too heavy for me to turn over to see if it was marked.  CHZ arrived for the assist and she asked what it said.  I told her, "Heywood Wakefield."  She was like, "Shut your mouth!"

But there it was plain as day.  Well worth the $25 asking price.

It is in fair to poor condition.  Looks like a homemade repair with toothpaste on one part of the front of it.  IMHO the rarity of the piece holds value even though the condition isn't pristine.

I would also note that the wood used and craftsmanship of this piece is impressive.  It is heavy and well constructed.  But it's so cool and it might need to go to someone who might restore it and place with another piece similar to it.
