What was the Beatles song, "Let it be," about?
Mary was the name of Paul McCartney's mother. She died when Paul was 14. ("Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be ....") Many people believe the song is about the Virgin Mary but it's actually about Paul's mom.
The song is about a dream Paul had about his mother, who appeared to him at a time of need, ten years after her death. ("In my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me, speaking words of wisdom...")
Stories have circulated the John Lennon hated the religious nature of the song, so arranged to have the track "Maggie May" (about a prostitute) follow the song on the album of the same name.
The working title of the album was "Get Back" and it was completed prior to "Abbey Road," but it remained unreleased. Producer Phil Spector reworked the album, giving the work it's final name, "Let it Be."
The phrase itself, let it be, reflected a sense or need to leave things alone. The band was breaking up and it was time for the lads to get on with their lives, personally and artistically.
Due to release delays, the Beatles were not the first artists to officially release the sing, "Let it Be." That honor went to Aretha Franklin in an album released about two months prior to the Beatles release.
When Linda McCartney died, the song "Let it Be" was played at her funeral.
